Iridium.
The only network with verified coverage at both poles. A 66-satellite low-earth-orbit mesh that talks to itself — so a call routes through the constellation, not a single ground station. If you might be anywhere on Earth, this is the safe default.
When you genuinely can't predict where you'll be.
Iridium is the network we reach for when a trip crosses latitudes, oceans or the edge of any other operator's footprint. Because the satellites are low and cross-linked, you get a usable signal in the open at the poles, mid-ocean and deep in the field — places where geostationary networks simply can't see the horizon.
The trade-off is bandwidth: it's superb for voice, SMS, email and lightweight data, but it isn't the network for streaming video from camp. For that we'd pair it with a BGAN terminal or point you at Inmarsat.

Frequently asked questions
Where does Iridium work?
Everywhere: Iridium is the only network with verified coverage at both poles. Its 66 low-earth-orbit satellites are cross-linked, so a call routes through the constellation rather than a single ground station. Iridium complies with US embargo restrictions, so service is withheld in a small number of sanctioned territories.
Iridium or Inmarsat?
It depends on where you will be. Inmarsat covers roughly 76°N to 76°S and has no polar coverage. If you will operate above 76°N or below 76°S, including Svalbard, much of Greenland and the Antarctic, only Iridium is reliably useful.
Does a satellite phone work indoors?
Not reliably. A satellite phone needs a direct line of sight from its antenna to the satellite, so it will not work inside buildings or vehicles unless used with an external antenna. Trees, hills and tall buildings can also block the signal: step outside into a clear view of the sky before making a call.
Can I use Iridium for internet access?
For lightweight data, yes. Iridium suits voice, SMS, email and lightweight data, but it is not the network for streaming video. Handsets carry 2.4 kbps; Iridium Certus 700 terminals reach up to 704 kbps, and the GO! exec 88 kbps.
Which equipment works on Iridium?
Iridium handsets such as the 9575 Extreme and 9555, Iridium Push To Talk devices, the Iridium GO! Wi-Fi hotspots, and Iridium Certus terminals for land and marine use.
