Inmarsat Global Xpress
Global Xpress is Inmarsat's Ka-band high-throughput service. It runs on a dedicated I-5 satellite fleet and delivers significantly higher data rates than legacy L-band Inmarsat services.
What it is
Where the traditional Inmarsat services (BGAN, FleetBroadband) use L-band, Global Xpress uses Ka-band — a higher frequency that gives much greater bandwidth at the cost of slightly more weather sensitivity. The result is broadband measured in tens to hundreds of Mbps, depending on terminal class and plan.
Services on GX
- Fleet Xpress (maritime) — primary Ka-band broadband with L-band fallback for resilience
- Jet ConneX (aviation) — premium cabin broadband for business aviation
- SwiftJet (aviation) — newer addition for the JX market
- GX terminals for land mobile and government
Where GX fits
- Commercial vessels needing crew internet, telemedicine, IoT plus operational comms
- Business and government aviation needing real cabin internet
- Defence and government high-throughput connectivity
- Where Inmarsat coverage is reliable — GX doesn't change Inmarsat's coverage map; it still excludes the high polar regions
