Why do I need a satphone?
If you regularly travel to areas that are not well covered by normal
landlines or GSM coverage, a satellite phone will be an invaluable
thing to take. In remote areas, satellite communications are an
invaluable way to ensure reliable methods of communications are
kept open. Even when in foreign countries with GSM coverage, the
affordable call rates offered by satellite networks mean they are
often cheaper to use than your GSM phone in roaming mode whilst
abroad.
Which is the best system for me?
This depends on your exact usage requirement. Please call one of
our consultants on 08000 747 400 to discuss your exact requirement,
or look at the what’s for you page.
How much are satellite call charges?
Depending on the network and tariff chosen, call rates cost from
less than US$1 per minute
Do satphones work in exactly the same way as mobile
phones?
Slightly differently from mobile phones, satellite communications
depend on having a clear line of sight to the satellite in the sky.
They work most effectively when used outside with as few obstructions
(tall buildings, mountains, trees etc) as possible. In remote areas
there tend to be less obstacles, but in towns and cities, inside
buildings or around built up areas it can be difficult to get a
clear line of sight to the satellite, and signal strength becomes
less strong.
But generally, if used outside with the handset antenna raised
and as much of a clear view to the sky as possible, the signal strength
should be good.
Can I send email using a satphone?
The handheld units on the Iridium,
Thuraya and Globalstar
networks have a data capacity. However, data rates are relatively
slow and the data function is not recommended for heavier use than
simple text emails. High speed data service is available using GAN
or RBGAN units on
the Inmarsat network.
Please note, to use the data service a data kit is a necessity
for connecting the handset to your laptop – a serial port
on your laptop is required for most data services.
Is there anywhere in the world that I can’t
use it?
There are a few countries that block satellite services –
it is worth checking with the embassy or trade commission of your
destination country prior to your departure.
Is there a pay as you go system?
The Iridium,
Thuraya and Inmarsat
networks all offer a prepaid service. Prepay credit can be bought
and topped up in a similar way to mobile phones.
Can I send text messages?
SMS messages can be sent and received on the Iridium network, and
Thuraya phones (tariff dependant).
Can I use a mobile network SIM card in my satellite
phone?
SIM cards from many mobile phone networks can be used in Thuraya
and Globalstar phones. International roaming must be activated with
the mobile network provider. Call rates may increase and coverage
area decrease with a mobile phone SIM card.
Can you supply everything I need?
Yes. We can supply equipment, accessories and airtime (service)
contracts. Please call us to discuss your requirement.
